Exploring Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula with Kids: Our Family’s Favorite Places to Stay, Play & Explore

Houghton Waterway

Some family vacations are memorable because of everything you managed to squeeze into the itinerary. Others stay with you because of how a place made you feel. Our August trip to Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula was the second kind.

Tucked away at the northern tip of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the Keweenaw is a destination filled with rugged Lake Superior shoreline, waterfalls, historic mining towns, lighthouses, and quiet beaches that seem almost too beautiful to be real. And after spending several days exploring this remote corner of Michigan with our three kids, I can confidently say it’s one of those places we’ll return to again and again.

In the Season 4 premiere of The My Outdoorsy Mom Podcast, I’m sharing our complete family trip recap, including where we stayed, our favorite activities, the places we’d recommend with kids, and what I’d do differently next time. But more than anything, this trip reminded me why I love traveling with my kids in the first place.

Where Is Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula?

The Keweenaw Peninsula extends into Lake Superior at the northernmost tip of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It’s home to the communities of Houghton, Hancock, Calumet, Eagle Harbor, and Copper Harbor, each offering its own unique personality and opportunities for outdoor adventure. We chose Houghton as our home base because of its convenient location, lively downtown, and proximity to many of the peninsula’s family-friendly attractions.

One thing I quickly learned? The Keweenaw is bigger than it looks on a map. If you’re planning a trip with young kids, I recommend allowing several days to explore without feeling rushed.

Where We Stayed: Keweenaw Waters Resort

Keewenaw Waters Resort cabin

One of the highlights of our trip was our stay at Keweenaw Waters Resort, located just outside downtown Houghton. Our waterfront cabin was the perfect home base for our family of five. As a mom traveling with three kids, I especially appreciated the full kitchen, in-unit washer and dryer, spacious sleeping arrangements, and blackout curtains.

And perhaps our family’s favorite amenity? The sauna. After long days of hiking, swimming, and exploring, we ended our evenings relaxing in the sauna before everyone settled in for some of the best sleep of the summer. We also loved the resort’s waterfront location, friendly staff, and easy access to downtown Houghton.

For families who prefer RV travel, the property also offers a campground.

Exploring Downtown Houghton with Kids

Ray Kestner Waterfront Park, a.k.a. Chutes & Ladders

Houghton surprised me. With Michigan Technological University nearby, the downtown area has a vibrant college-town atmosphere, complete with restaurants, murals, shops, and beautiful views of the Keweenaw Waterway. One of our first stops was Ray Kestner Waterfront Park, better known as Chutes & Ladders.

This playground was a huge hit with our kids, and the nearby waterfront trail made for a beautiful evening walk. We finished our first night with dinner at The Ambassador, a local favorite known for its thin-crust pizza.

Why McLain State Park Was Our Family’s Favorite Stop

McLain State Park

Of all the places we visited in the Keweenaw Peninsula, the biggest surprise was McLain State Park. We went there three times. Yes, three! Between the sandy dunes, Lake Superior shoreline, places to explore, and delicious ice cream, my kids absolutely fell in love with this park.

One afternoon, after spending hours barefoot in the sand, my daughter announced, “I’ve been barefoot all day.” Then she added, “It’s really good for your body.” And that pretty much sums up the entire trip.

We didn’t bring toys, buckets, or elaborate activities. The kids simply played. They climbed dunes, explored among the trees, and created their own adventures. Sometimes the best thing we can give our kids on vacation is the freedom to enjoy the place we’re already in.

Waterfalls, Lighthouses & Copper Harbor

Playing at Hungarian Falls

Our biggest adventure day took us farther north through the Keweenaw Peninsula. We started with Hungarian Falls, where the kids enjoyed hiking and scrambling along the trails. Next was Houghton-Douglass Falls, an impressive waterfall surrounded by rugged terrain. Parents with young children should be particularly cautious around the exposed edges and undeveloped areas.

From there, we explored Eagle Harbor Lighthouse, one of my personal favorite stops. The lighthouse offered a wonderful combination of history, scenery, and exploration that our whole family enjoyed. We continued north to Copper Harbor, where we visited the Keweenaw Agate Shop, sampled thimbleberry donuts from Jamsen’s Bakery, and explored Estivant Pines.

We also drove Brockway Mountain Drive, which offers spectacular panoramic views of Lake Superior and the surrounding peninsula.

The Beach I Wish We’d Spent More Time At

Bete Gris Bay

If there’s one place I wish we’d given more time, it’s Bete Grise Bay. Located along the eastern shoreline of the peninsula, this beautiful sandy beach felt completely different from the rugged, rocky coastline we’d explored earlier in the day. The water was calm, the sand was soft, and we shared the beach with just one other family.

Watching my kids swim and play in Lake Superior while surrounded by that incredible scenery was one of my favorite memories from our trip. Next time, I’m packing a picnic and spending an entire afternoon there.

What I’d Do Differently Next Time

Our biggest lesson? Slow down.

There is so much to see in the Keweenaw that it’s tempting to pack every day with activities. But this is a destination where the scenic drives, roadside beaches, and unexpected stops are often just as memorable as the major attractions.

Next time, I’d give ourselves more time in Copper Harbor, spend a longer afternoon at Bete Grise Bay, and hopefully return during Michigan’s spectacular fall color season.

Tips for Visiting the Keweenaw Peninsula with Kids

If you’re planning a family trip, here are a few practical things worth knowing:

Download offline maps before heading into remote areas, where cell reception can be unreliable.

Pack layers, even in summer. Weather along Lake Superior can change quickly.

Bring both hiking shoes and water shoes for the peninsula’s varied terrain.

And perhaps my favorite travel tip: always keep swimsuits and towels in the car.

Some of our favorite memories came from spontaneous stops along Michigan’s beautiful Great Lakes shoreline.

The Best Family Adventures Aren’t Always Planned

Looking back on our trip, I know my kids won’t remember every waterfall we visited or every scenic overlook we stopped at. But they’ll remember the sand dunes at McLain State Park. They’ll remember the ice cream. They’ll remember making friends at the campground, riding a little electric boat along the waterway, and staying up late enough to watch the sun disappear over Lake Superior.

And that’s what I love about exploring places like the Keweenaw. Sometimes getting kids outside isn’t about planning bigger adventures. It’s simply about taking them somewhere that gives them enough space to find their own.
